This military building was ordered by the King Alfonso XI in 1328. It was built on the ruins of Roman.
The Islamic constructions, being enlarged during the Trastámara dynasty´ s reign (XIV Century). It consists of courtyards and marvellous gardens such as the Paseo de los Reyes (Kings´ Avenue), with statues of the main monarchs. It has a square floor finished off by four towers. You access to the precinct through the Torre de los Leones (Tower of the Lions).
The Salón de Mosaicos (Room of Mosaics) has mosaics in its walls that belong to the Plaza de la Corredera and to a Roman sarcophagus from the III and II Centuries. Finally, we can find the Royal Baths and the Patio Morisco (Spanish Moor´ s Courtyard).
Attached to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos we can see the stables, ordered by the king Felipe II in 1570 with the aim of breeding healthy horses for the Royal Family. Although its date of construction was during the XVI Century, they were rebuilt during Carlos III´ s reign, after suffering a great fire.
This place was used as residence of the Catholic Kings during 8 years and it was in this place where they met Christopher Columbus.
Monday to Saturday: From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Sundays and Public Holidays: From 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The monument is closed: 1 January and 25 December.
General entrance ticket: 4 €.
Reduced price entry: 2 € (students, with ID).
Free entry: Fridays, people over 65 years old, disabled people and children under 14 years old, with ID.
