It was built after the First Enlargement of the city, in 1877, in a Neogothic style. It is a rectangular and symmetric building with Latin Cross plan, three naves, a transept and a chancel. Its peculiar structure presents a central tower which is 75 meters high and was built by Ramón Cortázar.
Among the architectural elements, we should highlight the shells from Filipinas that are used as fonts. The apse has fourteen stained- glass windows, made by Juan Bautista Lázaro that represent the twelve apostles and the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and two rose windows, that make the building more spectacular.
We should also highlight other decorative elements such as gargoyles, pinnacles. When the diocese of San Sebastián was created in 1949, the Buen Pastor Church became a Cathedral, so several changes were made in the temple: the original major altar with the image of the Buen Pastor. More than fifty years later, an organ with more than ten thousand tubes and thousand tones of weight was placed; it is, without any type of doubt, one of the biggest in Europe.
