The convent was founded in the XIII Century and rebuilt in the XVIII Century.
Because of a fire, the church of the convent was later restored, but only some parts. Inside, the church houses important works of art such as a Christ from the XIV Century or a font from Visigoths´ times that comes from the former church.
One of the most distinguished guests of the convent was Christopher Columbus, while he was waiting for being received by the Catholic Kings. The Convento de la Merced is now the head office of Córdoba County Council.
