The Escuelas Menores (Salamanca Minor Schools) were established in 1428, although the current building was built in 1533.
The main entrance consists of two round arches leaned on columns with Corinthian capitals. Over the arches, medallions offer Christ´ s face (in the centre), and Hercules and Teseo´ s face (on both sides) over which you can see a panel divided into three parts with the coat of arms of Carlos V´ s empire, and San Pedro and San Pablo´ s busts further up.
The Courtyard is the best example of the typical Salamanca architecture. Its Gothic style is of great simplicity, with Baroque and Renaissance motives. On the Southern side, we can find the famous “cielo de Salamanca” (Salamanca´ s Sky), by Fernando Gallego.
Next to the Escuelas Menores, we can find the Hospital de Estudio that was used as hall of residence for students with no need of support. On the Eastern side of this complex the statue of Fray Luis de León is placed, carried out in Rome in 1869 by the Italian sculptor Nicasio Sevilla.
