The queen María Cristina de Habsburgo ordered the construction of this Palace in the place popularly known as “Pico del Loro”, between the beaches of Ondarreta and the Concha. It has an eclectic style, following models of British architecture: an exposed brick façade, octagonal tower, Tudor arches, etc. The building has three floors, basement, its own park, and several buildings.
Other buildings that belong to this complex are the Casa de los Oficios, Portería, Cuerpo de Guardia and the gardens, by Pierre Ducasse. The palace was the Spanish Royal Family´ s summer residence until the decade of the 30s of the XX Century. Nowadays, it is the headquarters of the Summer Courses of the University of the Basque Country and Eusko Ikaskuntza- Sociedad de estudios vascos. It is popularly known as “La Casa del Príncipe”.
