This gate is the most beautiful and emblematic entrance to the town, ordered by the emperor Carlos V.
Although it is originally Arab, it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1550 by Alonso de Covarrubias, becoming a Renaissance construction.
It was thought to be a great triumphal arch that consists of two bodies divided by a square of arms and an arch. It has two large fortified towers built with masonry. The gate is crowned by the coat of arms of the eagle with two heads which Carlos V gives to the town of Toledo.
We should not forget the Old Gate of Bisagra (Puerta Vieja de Bisagra), also known as Alfonso VI´ s gate (Puerta de Alfonso VI), that was built by the Arabs at the beginning of the X Century.
