It is a museum of Spanish art from the XX Century. It has headquarters in the old San Carlos Hospital built by Francisco Sabatini, and recently enlarged by the architect Jean Nouvel. It was inaugurated the 10th September 1992 by their Majesties the King and the Queen of Spain Juan Carlos and Sofía.
The works of art exposed in it have constantly been enriched. Its modern art collection is one of the most valued.

From January 1st to December 31st, 2008, on the occasion of the "Año Iberoamericano de los Museos", citizens of Latin American countries will be entitled to the same admission concessions as citizens of the EU: Holders of “Carnet joven” (youth card), Students over 18 years old, Researches, Groups linked to cultural or educational institutions, with 15 or more members, National citizens and citizens of the EU who are members of large families,

Admission is also free to "Producciones", the Librar, the Terraces, the Shop, the BookShop, Café and Restaurant in the Extension building, and to the Palacio de Velázquez and the Palacio de Cristal (at the Retiro Park).

Paseo del Arte Card: 14,40 euros:
Valid for one year, this combined ticket allows one visit to the Museo del Prado, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
This ticket is provided at the Ticket´s Office.
Annual multiple card: 36,06 euros:
Valid for one year, this pass allows unlimited visits to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo Nacional del Prado and all state-owned museums.
This ticket is provided at the information Desk at the Edificio Sabatini´s main entrance.
