Roman Bridge

Roman Bridge

The bridge was built over the River Tormes, in times of Trajano. It consists of twenty six round arches leaned on pillars built with ashlar of country dressed granite, divided by supports and settled over pillars with buttress directed against the current.

At the entrance of the bridge we can see a bull that is immortalized by the Spanish novel “El Lazarillo de Tormes”. It was placed in the middle of the bridge. The bull silhouette and the bridge, that are part of the heraldic coat of arms of the town were tried to be rebuilt since the XIII Century.

It was part of the Roman paved road of the Plata that linked Mérida with Astorga.
