This church was built over a former Romanesque one in the last third of the XIII Century and the first half of the XIV Century. It has three naves with simple barrel vaults.
Under a solid tower, a door from the end of the XIII Century is opened, framed by a pointed arch, with three archivolts with images of Saints next to jambs in which we can see “statues- columns”, whereas in the tympanum there are images dedicated to Christ and San Esteban.
Over this door, there is a great rose window. We can see influences of the Burgos cathedral in this church. There is a choir, in a flowery Gothic style and with Flamboyant tracery, by Simón de Colonia and Nicolás Vergara, who also worked in the triforium, the arches of the organ, the choir staircase, the sepulchres, etc.
Inside, is located the Museo Diocesano del Retablo. San Esteban is the only church, among the parish churches in Burgos that has cloister. It is from the XIV Century and is the burial place of important families of that time.
