San Pedro Parish Church

It is a Gothic Church that was built by the Caballeros de la Flor y Nata from Ciudad Real.

Outside, we should highlight the tower with spire and three doors: the Puerta del Perdón (Door of forgiveness) which is called like that because it is situated in front of the Prison of the Santa Hermandad; the Puerta de la Umbría (Door of the shady place) and the Puerta del Sol (Door of the sun).

Inside, we should highlight the columns of the rib vaults and its capitals decorated with peculiar motifs, such as man´ s heads, animals or vegetables. However, the most relevant and amazing element is the Capilla de los Coca (Coca Chapel), that has a sepulchre with the remains of the Chantre of Coria and Isabel I de Castilla´ s confessor, Fernando de Coca. This sepulchre is a Spanish – Flemish work from the XV Century, similar to Doncel of Sigüenza´ s one. In this chapel we can also find the sepulchres of Fernando Coca´ s parents situated on the floor and an alabaster altarpiece of the Virgen de Loreto made with glazed tiles from Talavera de la Reina.

The Holy Church Prioral of the Military Orders Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Meadow of Ciudad Real is a construction that dates back to the 15th century. Its origins could actually be placed around the 13th and 14th centuries, when a hermitage was built on the same site, of which today only a door (the current Door of Forgiveness) and a rose window remain.

The Cathedral was established in the context of the granting of the title of "city" to Ciudad Real in 1420. It is a simple construction, based on the Gothic style and incorporating elements reminiscent of the late Romanesque. It is worth mentioning how only one of the two planned towers was completed, along with two parts of the second. One of them seems to have been demolished in the 18th century due to the Lisbon earthquake. Today we can only see one tower, which actually dates from the 19th century.

The way the site is arranged around a large and spacious nave is striking. In it, in the apse, stands the Main Altarpiece, made in the 17th century in Baroque style by Giraldo de Merlo.

Besides the damages suffered from the Lisbon earthquake, the Cathedral was also damaged during the Civil War. That is why in the 20th century a series of restoration processes were undertaken which have allowed the building to endure without major damage.

As we can see, the Cathedral of Ciudad Real is a work that mixes three styles: Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance. All of this is a product of chance and coincidence, which has made it one of the most unusual cathedral sites on the peninsula.
