Santa María de Mediavilla Cathedral

Santa María de Mediavilla Cathedral

Although it originally comes from the first Romasnesque Centuries, it was enlarged in the XIII, and three centuries later became Cathedral.

It has a Mudéjar bell tower and a beautiful dome with coloured tiles. Outside the temple, the square Mudéjar tower from 1257 should be highlighted. It has three bodies that are decorated with ceramics, and belongs to the model tower- door. A very important work in the Teruel art and is one of the first monuments of the Mudéjar art from Aragón.

Inside, it is divided into three naves. The main one is a Juzaff´ s work of art, a Moor from Zaragoza who substituted the Romanesque apses for other Gothic- Mudéjar apses. It is covered by a beautiful coffered ceiling which is 32 meters length and comes from the XIV Century. This central nave has a double dome from 1538 and the side naves are covered by rib vaults.

The temple is decorated with important polychrome paintings, with wooden roofs, and a beautiful grille in the Major Chapel and the choir.

The Major Altar is Plateresque. The altarpiece is from 1532 and was made by Gabriel Juli. The baptistery belongs to the XVIII Century and is decorated with glazed tiles painted with religious scenes.
