Province of Álava

The province of Álava is one of the greenest in Spain. Throughout its territory, we find several natural parks and vast forests of beech and oak trees that, along with the mix of tradition and modernity that defines its capital, make Álava a fascinating place.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is a city originally medieval to which the extension planned between the 18th and 19th centuries gave new and romantic airs. Some of the most notable places in Vitoria are the Plaza de España, Virgen Blanca square, or the Plaza del Matxete, located in the medieval quarter. Other sites of interest in the capital are the Casa del Cordón, Santa Maria Cathedral, Maria Inmaculada Cathedral, and Correría street.

The Green Ring of Vitoria is a large area made up of extensive forests and parks that justify the title held by Vitoria as European Green Capital. It is undoubtedly an essential walk.

The five natural parks of the province are Valderejo, a valley with impressive wildlife and flora, Izki park, through which flows the river of the same name and is a territory of caves, beech woods, and endless natural treasures; Aizkorri-Aratz, a rocky landscape with various sites; Urkiola, land that turns ochre with the arrival of autumn, and Gorbeia, a perfect place for hiking enthusiasts.

On the other hand, Laguardia is a town with deep medieval charm and one of the most important in the famous Rioja Alavesa for producing excellent wines apart from the local Txakoli. Salvatierra is one of the most beautiful villages in Álava. It is a walled medieval town with an interesting historical centre. Elciego is another municipality of La Rioja Alavesa where highlights include its main square and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Plaza.

Álava has a good gastronomic tradition just like its neighbours Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. Pintxos are some of the delights that can be tasted in the province, as well as dishes like Alavese stew and desserts such as goxua, a kind of custard with cake and cream.
