The Phoenician 'Malaka', later Arab and then Christian, preserves an admirable historic centre. From the viewpoint of the Gibralfaro castle, there is a beautiful panorama. This fortress has its origins in the remains of a Phoenician settlement and a later Arab alcázar. It was built as it is known today in the 14th century. Originally, it had a primarily defensive purpose. At the foot of Mount Gibralfaro is the Roman theatre, the main trace of the Romans passing through the city. The Alcazaba of Málaga, situated next to the theatre, is in an excellent state of conservation and was built as a palace by Abderrahman III.
The Cathedral of the Incarnation in Málaga was designed by the Renaissance architect Diego de Siloé on the foundations of an old mosque.
The Atarazanas Market was built in the 19th century on what was once an Arab naval workshop. From this period, it preserves a beautiful marble door.
In the old town of the city lies a large part of Málaga's extensive cultural offer. The Carmen Thyssen Museum houses a magnificent collection of 19th and 20th-century paintings that are essential to admire. It also often hosts high-quality temporary exhibitions.
Málaga has dedicated two museums to its most illustrious neighbour: Pablo Picasso. The first is the Picasso Museum, a must-visit if we approach the capital of the Costa del Sol. In this museum, we can see a good part of Picasso's work; and in the Fundación Picasso Museo Casa Natal, various works and objects that belonged to the cubist genius can be observed, as well as temporary exhibitions.
Another cultural point of interest is the Russian Museum, which is located in the old Royal Tobacco Factory of Málaga. In the Automobile and Fashion Museum, one can admire an interesting private collection of cars from all eras; as well as a small fashion display that complements the exhibition. The Music Museum, the Provincial Museum of Málaga and the Centre Pompidou are other places of great cultural attraction.
The best Málaga establishments for leisure are at its port. The capital also boasts some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol where you can enjoy a grilled sardine skewer or a delicious seafood fry in its beach bars. Muelle Uno, at the port, and Calle Larios, in the centre, are full of establishments for shopping lovers.
One of the best times to visit Málaga is during its August fair, when the capital's streets are filled with joy and music; or during Holy Week, as the Málaga one has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest because of the grandeur of its processions.
