Catedral de la Encarnación

This cathedral was built on the ruins of the former mosque of Aljama. A spacious marble staircase gives access to the great portico.

Its façade is in Renaissance style and is divided into two floors. In the lower one there are three arches and inside of them, doors are divided by marble columns. Over the doors there are medallions. The side doors represent the Patron Saints of Málaga, San Ciriaco and Santa Paula, whereas the central one represents a Bible scene.

The only finished tower, from the two towers that were planned in the primitive project, is more than 92 meters height and in its bell tower there more than fifteen bells, The South tower was not finished because the money was used for helping America, that is why it is known as “La Manquita”. Inside, it is in Baroque style.

The Basilica is rectangular and is composed by three naves, being the central one wider than the side ones, but all of them have the same height. The set of chairs of the choir was carried out by Pedro de Mena and is a real masterpiece.

We should highlight the elegant architecture of its choir, by the famous Alonso Cano. In the altarpiece of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, we can see the image of the Virgin that the Catholic Kings carried when they conquered the town.

We should add a board by Luis de Morales (Divino Morales), a sculpture of the Virgen de los Dolores by Pedro de Mena and other pieces by Andrea del Sarto, Van Dyck, as well as some paintings of Fernando Niño de Guevara.

Built: XVI Century (1528- 1782)

Author: Diego de Siloé

Style: Baroque, Renaissance

Category: Religious

Type: Cathedral
