Madrid is one of the largest cities in Europe and also one of the favourites among travellers. Its streets blend history, tradition, and modernity with leisure and culture.
The Puerta del Sol is one of the most famous places in the capital. It houses the Royal Post Office, a landmark building, the plaque indicating kilometre zero of Spanish roads and the symbolic statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree.
In the area known as the Madrid of the Austrias there are standout locations such as the Plaza Mayor, another of the most important places in the Spanish capital. There, we can visit the Casa de la Panadería, whose façade is decorated with mythological paintings. The Teatro Real, the Royal Palace, and the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena are some of the main sites of interest in Madrid. The Mercado de San Miguel is the perfect place for food lovers, and the Plaza de La Villa, the true centre of the Madrid of the Austrias, still retains its original medieval atmosphere, with very important historical buildings located there, such as the Casa and the Tower of the Lujanes or the Casa de la Villa. Very nearby is the Temple of Debod, a gift from Egypt to Spain.
The Retiro park is located east of Sol and, although it has been public since the 19th century, it was designed in 1630 for King Felipe IV. The Crystal Palace is in this same place and often hosts temporary exhibitions. In front of one of the park's entrance gates is the Puerta de Alcalá, one of Madrid's most famous monuments.
The Paseo del Prado could be described as the place with the greatest cultural heritage in Madrid. On this long avenue are located the National Prado Museum, the Thyssen, and the National Archaeological Museum among others.
The leisure agenda in Madrid is extraordinary. Besides visiting the previously mentioned museums, we can also go to the Círculo de Bellas Artes or to the Casa of America to see the many exhibitions they host throughout the year. Attending a football match of two of the most important international teams is also possible in the capital. Enjoy a concert at Las Ventas or one of the many musicals hosted by Madrid's theatres.
Madrid is also a perfect city for shopping. In Gran Vía, Serrano, Fuencarral, Preciados and even in the famous Rastro you can find anything you're looking for.
Enjoy the gastronomy of bravas and calamari sandwiches and the Madrid nightlife in the many venues in La Latina, Chueca, and Malasaña; or have fun at the Amusement Park or at the Zoo Aquarium. In short, Madrid is a city for everyone.
