The Museum was founded in 1867 by Royal Decree of Isabel II. Visitors make a tour around the Iberian Peninsula which takes from the Prehistory to the XIX Century. Among its collections we should highlight: Egypt and Greece, numismatics collections and a partial reproduction of the polychromes room of the Cave of Altamira, located in the garden of access.
It consists of archaeological, ethnographic, decorative arts and numismatic materials that Spanish Monarchs have collected in the Royal Library, in the Real Gabinete de Historia Natural (now called National Museum of Natural History of Spain) and other institutions. The building, in a Neoclassic style, has a rectangular floor and four big interior courtyards.
The facade of the Calle Serrano presents a gate with two Doric columns at the entrance and an Ionic colonnade in the row of balconies of the upper floor. It has a Library available which is specialised in art scientific publications, as well as history, archaeology and museology. One of its most admired works is the bust of the Dama de Elche (Lady from Elche).
