Oviedo is considered the city of the Pre-Romanesque due to the large number of remains it preserves both in its historic centre, where the 9th-century San Tirso Church can be found, and on Mount Naranco.
Cimadevilla is the oldest part of the Asturian capital. Around this street is the main and first building of the University of Oviedo, designed by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and Juan del Ribero Rada in the 16th century. Nearby is the cathedral, originally an 8th-century basilica that was renovated in Gothic style. The parish of San Isidoro el Real is another religious monument housed in the historic centre. It is a Jesuit-style 16th-century church that was previously dedicated to St Matías.
The Fontán Square is a colourful and charming place in the historic centre. There used to be a lagoon here which was a popular recreation spot for the locals of Oviedo, so the city’s merchants saw an opportunity to sell their goods at this site. To this day, the square still retains that market.
During a walk through the oldest part of Oviedo, a collection of all kinds of sculptures can be seen. The most famous of all is La Regenta, made in honour of the character from Clarín’s eponymous work, the author who was inspired by Oviedo to create the city of ‘Vetusta’.
The main Pre-Romanesque buildings of Oviedo are located on Mount Naranco: the San Miguel de Lillo Church, the Santa María del Naranco Church, and the Asturian Pre-Romanesque Interpretation and Reception Centre, where we can learn and interpret these architectural jewels as well as the San Julián de los Prados Church, also Pre-Romanesque in style and located to the east of the city.
The Campo de San Francisco, the main green space in the city of Oviedo, was originally a monastery's orchard. It is a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by trees, little animals, and fountains. In this park, there is a sculpture of Mafalda placed there when its creator received the Princess of Asturias Award. The awards ceremony is held at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.
The entertainment agenda of the Asturian capital includes all cultural activities that can be done, such as in the Archaeological Museum of Asturias, the Fine Arts Museum, or the Archaeological Museum, which holds many Pre-Romanesque remains. If we enjoy shopping, we can visit Uría Street in Oviedo. This street also has many bars, cafes, and restaurants where you can enjoy the Asturian cuisine.
