Palma

Palma is one of the main tourist destinations in Spain due to its wonderful climate and excellent paradisiacal coves. But, aside from enjoying its beaches, this island city also has many sites of interest and monuments that are well worth a cultural visit.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma began construction in the 13th century under the principles of Levantine Gothic. This temple boasts one of the largest Gothic rose windows in the world, known as the "Gothic Eye". Twice a year, light penetrates through the more than 1000 crystals that make up the stained glass, creating a beautiful light image that can only be seen for a few minutes. This event is known as the "eight of the Cathedral of Palma". In summer, from the terraces of the cathedral, you can enjoy a good view of Palma.

The Bellver Castle is the oldest circular castle in Europe. It was built in the 13th century by the order of James II and is of Gothic civil style. During the Civil War, it served as a prison and currently houses the Museum of the History of the City of Palma. Meanwhile, the Almudaina Palace is one of the residences of the Spanish royal family. It was erected over ruins of Roman origin and, from its original use as a palace fortress, it has been the residence of all monarchs. S'Hort del Rei is a garden located next to the Almudaina and in its origin, the 14th century, it housed different types of trees and flowers. Later, in the 20th century, it was redesigned by a landscape architect, who gave it the appearance it has today.

The Lonja de Palma is one of the best examples of Gothic civil architecture in Spain. It was built in the 15th century as a place for merchants due to the intense activity taking place in the ports.

The main squares, Major and Cort, are the most central and emblematic of Palma. In the centre of Cort, there is an ancient olive tree and also Palma Town Hall, with a beautiful baroque facade.

In addition to urban beaches like C’an Pere or Cala Estancia that Palma boasts of, the leisure offer includes various museums such as the Diocesan Museum, Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Palma, or the Palau March Museum. Palma Aquarium is a perfect place to discover the secrets of the ocean and will delight the little ones.

Palma is known for its nightlife, especially in Magaluf. The areas of the Santa Catalina neighbourhood and the Olivar Market are currently very popular among the people of Palma and are perfect for tasting dishes of Mallorcan gastronomy, among which the sobrasada and ensaimadas stand out.
