Royal Palace of La Almudaina

Historical context

The Royal Castle of Almudaina was built in a place in Palma de Mallorca where settlements have been known to exist since Roman times. It may have already been the seat of power on the island since then.

The imposing alcázar was known at the time of the conquest under the name "Zuda" and was rebuilt following the model of the Royal Palace in Perpignan.

Here successively had their court the monarchs of the Kingdom of Mallorca, those of Aragon, and those of Spain. Philip II was the one who designated the Great Hall or “Tinell” for the Royal Audience. In the rest of the building, he installed the Captaincy General of the Islands.

The current castle was erected between 1305 and 1314 for King James II. It is a modification of the Muslim alcázar that began in 1281. Traces of the Arab alcazaba (12th and 13th centuries) can still be traced in the building.

Renovation works were extended until 1343 during the reigns of James II (son of James I the Conqueror), Sancho I and James III. Almudaina was thus the seat of a prosperous Mallorcan kingdom in the 14th century until its inclusion in the Crown of Aragon in 1349 with Peter IV.

In the first half of the 16th century, the upper floor of the castle was built by order of King Charles I of Spain (and V of Germany).

Today, therefore, the Royal Palace of Almudaina is the official summer residence of the king; although really his stay with the other members of the royal family is in the Palace of Marivent (as is the case with the Palace of Zarzuela in Madrid).

Bellver Castle is the only circular castle in Spain and the oldest of the few of its kind in Europe.
The Cathedral of Mallorca, better known as La Seu, was built in 1230, during Jaime I´ s reign. It was built on the site of the existing Arab mosque of Medina Mayurca.
The important trading activity developped in the ports drove the king Jaime to hand over the lands in order to build this fish market, assigned as meeting point of merchants that did bussiness there.
