Casa Batlló

The Casa Batlló is a masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí, the foremost representative of Modernist Architecture in Spain. A work of fantastic style, original and full of imagination in every detail.

It is located at number 43 of the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, an iconic avenue that runs through the district of Eixample (Expansion). It was built between 1904 and 1906. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The place occupied by this house is called the Block of Discord, because it stands alongside other works by modernist architects: the Amatller house (next to Casa Batlló) by Josep Puig i Cadafalch; the Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner; the Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier; and the Casa Josefina Bonet by Marceliano Coquillat.

Casa Battló is a remodel of a building that previously existed, built by Emilio Sala Cortés. This building was acquired by the wealthy textile businessman Josep Batlló in 1903, who commissioned Gaudí with the new modernist project.

It clearly reflects Antoni Gaudí's artistic maturity in his naturalist phase (first decade of the 20th century). In this period, the architect perfected his most personal style, inspired by the organic forms of nature. Here he implemented new structural solutions, the result of his profound studies of ruled geometry. To these innovations, he added great creative and ornamental freedom. A unique style that starts from a baroque basis, attaining structural richness in his constructions, where forms and volumes are stripped of rationalist rigidity and classicism.

The facade of the Casa Batlló is undoubtedly the most outstanding element of this building. It combines stone with wrought iron, and trencadís (a decorative mosaic technique consisting of broken or 'chopped' ceramic or tile fragments joined with mortar), making this house one of the most original by Gaudí.

Its roof is shaped like the back of an animal, like a dragon or another fantastic animal with iridescent scales. It is crowned by a set of large sphere-shaped pieces resembling crests. Also notable on this facade is its tower crowned by a four-armed cross. The design of aquatic themes decorating the walls also stands out. The balconies are mask-shaped, and the gallery on the main floor simulates bones.

Within its interior, the ceiling of the main hall, the chimneys on the rooftop, its main staircase, and the parabolic arches found in the attic stand out. This creates open and spacious areas that were very advanced for their time.

Built: 1904 – 1906.
