The charming Santa Florentina Castle is an ancient construction from the 11th century located in Canet de Mar, a municipality in the Barcelona region of Maresme. Its foundation was built on an ancient Roman fortification. Its first owner was Guadimir de Canet. This property has been documented since 1217.
In the 16th century, it became the property of Dimas Muntaner. His family ran this castle until the current owners, the Campany family, took over.
In 1908, it served as the residence for Alfonso XIII, who granted the title of Count of Canet to Ramón de Montaner. Two years later, it was expanded and renovated by the modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The gargoyles on its façade were created by the sculptor Carles Flotats i Galtés.
This castle houses an interesting collection of works by Catalan artists from the early 20th century. Its two old defensive towers are still preserved. It features a Gothic gallery from the ancient monastery of El Tallat, located in Rocallaura (Lleida).
Today, we have a truly evocative castle, with an irregular layout, showcasing its medieval fortress character with beautiful towers and Gothic elements, maintaining great harmony with the modernist restoration.
It is under the protection of the General Declaration of the Decree of 22 April 1949, and the Spanish Historical Heritage Law 16/1985.
The magazine Architectural Digest. The most beautiful houses in the world, mentioned this castle in its November 1998 issue.
Although privately owned, the castle is preserved as a museum and also hosts the Classical Music Festival, held in July and August since 1999.
Additionally, it was used as a filming location for the successful series Game of Thrones. In this case, it represents "Horn Hill," the home of House Tarly (Samwell Tarly's family).
