Also known as the Minor Basilica and Main Parish of Saint Mary of the Assumption. It stands out at the highest point, contrasting with the whitewashed houses of the urban core, together with the Castle of Arcos.
It is a temple originally built in Mudejar style (14th – 15th centuries).
After deep renovations carried out during the first half of the 16th century, it became a monumental late Gothic church. This style predominates architecturally inside. While externally, it coexists with the later Renaissance and Baroque styles, passing through the transitional Plateresque.
Its layout is hall-type with three naves of equal height and a monumental apse. Its renovation was started by Alonso Rodríguez around 1520 and continued by Diego de Riaño -Senior Master at Seville Cathedral in 1528 and Senior Master of the churches of Arcos in 1532- and Juan Gil de Hontañón, both senior masters of the Seville Cathedral. Later, Martín de Gaínza took over the works, bringing a fully Renaissance style.
The flying buttresses date back to the year 1699, when Diego Moreno Meléndez directed their construction. Meanwhile, the dominant square and unfinished tower is from the 18th century, designed by Vicente Catalán Bengoechea. Both constructions are already in the Baroque style..
This monumental temple is declared a Cultural Heritage Site in the category of monument, published in the Gaceta on 4 June 1931.
