The Roman Theatre of Cádiz was built around 70 BC. Its construction was due to the interest of the Gaditan Lucius Cornelius, a personal friend of Caesar, in expanding the city. As a result, both the theatre and an amphitheatre and a new necropolis emerged.
The building was abandoned around the 3rd century AD, suffering various looting, pillaging and damage in the following centuries. Its remains were used during the Middle Ages for the construction of houses, stables or part of an Islamic fortress.
Recent excavations have managed to recover part of this monument after centuries. It seems that, at the time, it was one of the largest on the peninsula and accommodated the most spectators. It is also considered the oldest theatre on the peninsula.
The most monumental area of the structure, such as the stage and the portico, remain hidden today under the district of El Pópulo.
