Priego de Córdoba

Priego de Córdoba has one of the most beautiful baroque heritages in Córdoba. The Villa neighbourhood is the medieval old town. Standing out there is an Arab-origin castle whose keep has been declared a national historic-artistic monument. Here you can also find the church of the Assumption, a beautiful baroque architectural work and one of the best of this style in Andalusia.

Within Priego de Córdoba's collection of baroque architectural treasures, you'll also find the church of Aurora and San Pedro. The latter houses inside it sculptures by the baroque artist José de Mora.

The church of San Francisco is a temple of Gothic-Mudejar style whose most notable part is its chapel. Inside the temple is the sculpture of Jesus of the Column by Pedro de Mena.

In Priego de Córdoba, there are also several monuments of civil architecture; the building of the Royal Slaughterhouses is perhaps the most important. This place dates back to the 16th century, serving as a slaughterhouse and market. It boasts a beautiful mannerist façade and a small, charming stone staircase inside.

Other interesting places to admire in Priego de Córdoba are its fountains. The King's fountain features beautiful mythological sculptural groups which, combined with its baroque design, have earned it the distinction of a national historic-artistic monument. The Fountain of Health is adjacent to this and is also declared a national monument.

The History Museum of Priego houses a small collection of archaeological remains found in the town belonging to different historical periods; and an exhibition of paintings by Adolfo Lozano Sidro, a local painter and illustrator.
