Girona

Traversed by the rivers Ter, Güell, Galligants, and Onyar, the city of Girona attracts worldwide attention. A setting for films and series, it is a unique tourist attraction.

The origins of Girona take us back to Iberian times. It would be around the year 77 BC when Pompey, a Roman general, founded Gerunda to accommodate his soldiers. From that moment on, the city grew significantly thanks to its connection with the port of Empúries.

With the fall of the Empire, the city came under Visigothic rule, later being conquered by the Muslims and eventually belonging to the Carolingian territory from 785. From that moment, the County of Girona was born. The Jewish community at that time was important, and that is why today Girona possesses one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters, the so-called Call district. In the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, the city expanded considerably. In 1856, one of the city's emblems, the stone bridge, was inaugurated.

In terms of heritage, Girona stands out for its Cathedral. The temple, of Romanesque origin, is one of the most visited places. Also worth mentioning are the Church of Sant Feliu, the old Hospital of Santa Catalina, or the old quarter or Barri Vell.

Girona has been chosen by different super productions for filming. A notable example is Game of Thrones, one of the most-watched series in history. This is because, in addition to its heritage sites, the city's old quarter transports us to a past and unique era.
