Bubión

Bubión is a municipality in the Alpujarra of Granada. It is located within the boundaries of the Sierra Nevada National Park, specifically in the Barranco de Poqueira. It borders Capileira, Pampaneira, Soportújar, Lanjarón and La Taha.

The origins of the population date back to Roman times, based on a series of burials found. It was during the Islamic period that the municipality gained great importance. At that time, the nucleus, together with the current Capileira and Pampaneira, formed part of the Taha of Poqueira. A single space that encompassed the entire Barranco de Poqueira.

The transformations of the Islamic period created a unique environment. An agroecosystem based on irrigation ditches and irrigation networks that still endure to this day. With the Christian conquest, the social panorama changed considerably. Even more so after the War of the Alpujarras in the 16th century, which led to the expulsion of the Moors and the subsequent repopulation with people from the north of the peninsula. This was something that affected all the Alpujarra municipalities.

In 1982, the Poqueira ravine acquired the category of Asset of Cultural Interest (A.C.I.), with the typology of Historic Complex. This awarded both Bubión and Capileira and Pampaneira these honours. In turn, Bubión is part of the Network of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain.

Today, it is one of the most visited villages in the province of Granada and the Alpujarra. Its typically Alpujarra architecture creates a setting of white houses, flat roofs known as "terraos" and hat-shaped chimneys. All this is accompanied by various fountains and arcades, as well as the typical and traditional washhouses. A maze of Berber houses that harks back to medieval times.

At the same time, there are several routes and paths that cross or start in the village. Most propose a route through the ravine, connecting Bubión with Capileira and Pampaneira. This natural environment can also be enjoyed from the different viewpoints. Bubión's location makes it possibly the village with the best views of the Alpujarra.

Today, Bubión is one of the key places for all those who wish to enjoy a peaceful natural space in the heart of the Sierra Nevada National Park.
