The municipality of Monachil belongs to the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. It is located in the south-central part of the Vega de Granada region, just 8 kilometres from the city of Granada.
Its oldest origins are found at an archaeological site of Cerro de la Encina, where there are remains of a farming and mining settlement of the Argaric culture (1,800 BC). This site is one of the main remnants of this Bronze Age culture in the province of Granada, along with Cuesta del Negro in Purullena.
The extensive territory of the municipality of Monachil (90.13 square kilometres) is traversed by the river that bears its name, from east to west. Its morphology is elongated and notable for its different gradations, with the highest point being 3,394 metres at the summit of Veleta.
Monachil is divided into three population centres: the Old Town, neighbourhood of la Vega and Pradollano (officially, Sierra Nevada). The Old Town corresponds to the original village of Monachil, preserving all its essence by the river. From this urban centre, the famous hiking route of Los Cahorros and its suspension bridges in the mountainous area starts, among many other routes. The Old Town is also a lively place to enjoy its bars and restaurants.
The neighbourhood of la Vega (known as Barrio de Monachil) was built in the mid-20th century as a residential area, 2 kilometres from the original village or Old Town. It is located to the west and offers spectacular views of the Vega de Granada. It holds a wide range of services and some of the best restaurants in Monachil.
Pradollano is the highest area, located between 2,200 and 2,500 metres above sea level. Thousands of mountain enthusiasts visit both in summer and winter. The buildings in Pradollano are adapted to high mountains and snowfall. Furthermore, it is full of life during free time thanks to its offering of restaurants, concerts and other activities.
