Pampaneira is a municipality in the Alpujarra of Granada located in the heart of the Poqueira gorge. It borders the municipalities of Bubión, Capileira, La Taha, Órgiva, Carataunas, and Soportújar. It is within the Sierra Nevada National Park and is part of the Historical Complex of the Poqueira gorge, along with Bubión and Capileira.
Its history runs parallel to that of Bubión and Capileira, which formed an extensive nucleus in the Poqueira gorge. Of Roman origin, Pampaneira was also marked by the Islamic occupation. This period of over 500 years shaped its current architecture. Like all of Alpujarra, it was repopulated after the expulsion of the Moors by Philip II in the 16th century.
As in its neighbouring villages, it is known for its distinctly Berber architecture. The chimney pots shaped like hats and flat rooftops instead of tiled roofs are interwoven in the white streets.
In Pampaneira specifically, its squares, fountains, and winding alleyways stand out. An iconic place is Calle Verónica. A narrow and steep street crossed by an irrigation channel. This makes Pampaneira an ideal place for taking a variety of snapshots.
The village is connected by different routes with Bubión and Capileira, with Pampaneira being the start or finish of these. Situated in a stunning natural setting, it boasts a series of bars and restaurants where Alpujarra's gastronomy prevails. Like Bubión and Capileira, it is part of the network of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
