Quéntar

Quéntar is located just 13 kilometres from Granada’s capital, in the eastern part of the Vega de Granada. It is a small village surrounded by mountains, bathed by the Aguas Blancas River (a tributary of the Genil) and by the Quéntar reservoir. It lies in the depression that separates Sierra Nevada from the Sierra de Huétor, at almost 900 metres above sea level.

About 900 inhabitants live in Quéntar, making it an ideal destination to enjoy peace on a rural getaway, very close to the city of the Alhambra.

Its historical roots are situated in the Nasrid Granada, as Quéntar derives from the Arabic term Qaryat al-Kantar (“bridge and passage to the farmhouse”). Its narrow and steep streets reflect its Muslim urbanism.

As an interesting monument to visit in Quéntar, there is the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, built on an Arab mosque in the 16th century. Its Mudejar style reflects the cultural exchanges of that time.

The Cultural Heritage of Quéntar is highlighted by its traditions, festivals and especially the recreations of Moorish and Christian battles. This festival, declared of Tourist Interest in 2009, takes place in mid-September during the patron saint festivities of San Sebastián. The main protagonists of this representation are the king, the general, the ambassador, the lancer, and the warrior of each side. The troops are formed by both young and older people of the village. The recreation is divided into three parts: the first ends with the victory of the Moors; while the second and third parts celebrate the triumph of the Christians.

The Quéntar reservoir is another unique attraction in the area. It was inaugurated in 1976 and is one of the main reservoirs of Granada. There are several leisure areas where you can enjoy spectacular views of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape.

Quéntar has a natural environment with very special places to disconnect from routine, such as the Fuente de las Pavesas. This is the ideal area for a relaxing walk, characterised by its fountain and wild roses. The Cueva de los Trucheros trail is the perfect spot for hiking enthusiasts, who can enjoy suspension bridges along the way. In the Aguas Blancas Recreational Area, you can spend a wonderful day having lunch at its stone tables, walking, and even swimming in summer in Aguas Blancas.

Those wishing to engage in more adventurous active tourism activities can practice climbing on the La Colmena Via Ferrata. This route is equipped with all necessary safety, such as staples, cables, and bridges. It is an exceptional place to feel the adrenaline of climbing while enjoying views of Quéntar’s incredible landscape.
