Roman Villa of Salar

The Roman villa of Salar is located on the western slope of the Genil River basin, as it passes through this town in the Loja region. It is a Roman dwelling dated between the 1st and 5th centuries AD.
Previously, this villa was situated near one of the Roman communication roads of the Bética province, specifically, the road that crossed the Granada depression transversally. This province, where Salar is located, was one of the most important in terms of exporting products of the Mediterranean triad (wheat, oil, and wine).

This site was discovered by chance, as it was found in 2004 while the land was being prepared to construct a wastewater treatment plant. Archaeological excavations began in October 2006 and ended five years later. Although the excavation project continues today, with plans to expand until 2023, guided tours of the site have been opened.

These archaeological works -directed by Julio Román Punzón, archaeologist and professor at the University of Granada- have yielded remarkable findings such as numerous mosaics, or a sculpture of a Venus pudica from the 2nd century.  Other sculptures found include the Pudica Nymph and the Venera Nymph.

Built: 2nd - 5th Century AD

Style: Roman Classic
