Castle of Zafra

The Castle of Zafra is a 12th-century construction located on a rock in the Vega de Zafra, in the Sierra de Caldereros; specifically between the municipalities of Campillo de Dueñas and Hombrados (Guadalajara). It was the bastion of the Lordship of Molina.

It is a spectacular example of a cliff castle, notable for being situated in an area of rugged orography, with its keep tower standing out, built on a rocky outcrop.

Today it can only be visited externally, and it is under the protection of the general state of the Order of April 22, 1949, and Spanish Historical Heritage Law Nº 16/1985.

Currently, it is privately owned. Mr. Antonio Sanz Polo bought it from the State in a public auction held in Guadalajara, and partially restored it.

As a curiosity, due to the peculiarity of this tower, this castle was the set for “The Tower of Joy” in the sixth season of Game of Thrones; as it bears some resemblance in terms of location to the one conceptualised by George R.R. Martin.

Certainly, this castle and its surrounding area offer idyllic views to the visitor's eye.
