Castle of Zafra

Artistic Description

This is the most spectacular and striking castle in Guadalajara. The rock on which it is set was carved to accentuate its slope and its impregnable character. In the surrounding meadow, minimal remains of buildings that most likely belonged to the outer castle wall, which would be used as stables or as a bailey, can still be found.

Today, Zafra Castle is partially restored, preserving part of the walls that formed its crenellated wall, reinforced with corner towers. In its bailey, we can find the cistern. Foundations of what was once another tower spanning the rock from one side to the other, and that upon being crossed, allows entry to what was the bailey, from which the keep - now fully reconstructed - can be accessed via a stone staircase attached to the wall, are still preserved.

The keep still retains a Gothic door with a pointed arch. Inside, there is a spiral staircase leading to the terrace on the upper part.

The unresolved enigma for historians is the area enclosed by the fortress walls, whose space is scant for storing weapons or provisions. There is a theory that large caves were excavated in the rock on which the castle stands.

To climb to the castle on the crag, you must ascend a wooden staircase installed by the current owner, Mr. Sanz Polo. Previously, the only way to access the fort was by climbing the rock, which truly posed a risk. It is known that in the times of the Counts of Lara, it had such access that it was rated as ingenious and skillful by chroniclers.

In the year 2016, this site became very famous for being one of the filming locations for the sixth season of Game of Thrones. Specifically, it appears in the third episode in a scene lasting more than five minutes as the “Tower of Joy” in the Kingdom of Dorne.
