Huesca

The city of Huesca, capital of the province of the same name, stands out as one of the most important hubs in Aragón. It is located in the comarca of Hoya de Huesca and within its municipal boundary lies the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park, a unique natural setting.

The origins of Huesca date back to the times of the Iberians, who founded a settlement named Bolskan. With the arrival of the Roman legions around the 2nd century BC, the name changed to Osca. In the Roman city, a senate of 300 members was formed, along with the so-called Academy of Latinity, which is considered the predecessor of the Sertorian University of Huesca.

With the fall of the Empire, the Visigoths took the territory until 719, when the Muslims arrived in the area. Huesca thus became one of the northernmost Andalusian territories, a clear frontier between the caliphate, the Franks, and the Christian kingdoms. Already in the 2nd century, Peter I of Aragón conquered the city after the Battle of Alcoraz. From that moment, it became a vital point for connecting the Kingdom of Aragón with the Castilian territories.

From the medieval period, various heritage buildings remain. We speak of the Cathedral or the Church of San Pedro el Viejo. Precisely, in this temple, one of the city's most popular legends took place. The legend known as the Bell of Huesca tells how Ramiro II the Monk, King of Aragón, beheaded twelve nobles who opposed his will.

Currently, Huesca is experiencing a rise in inland tourism. Its proximity to the Pyrenees and its climate are factors that attract thousands of visitors. The streets of its historic centre mix cultural heritage with a variety of gastronomic offerings. Additionally, festivals such as those celebrated every August in honour of San Lorenzo are worth mentioning. Without a doubt, the city is an ideal combination of heritage, culture, gastronomy, and incredible natural surroundings in a community to be discovered, like Aragón.
