La Carolina is undoubtedly one of the most unique municipalities in the province of Jaén. Located in Sierra Morena, it is considered the natural gateway to Andalusia, next to the Despeñaperros Natural Park. The municipality is composed of five population centres: La Carolina as the main one, Navas de Tolosa, La Fernandina, La Isabela, and El Guindo.
Precisely, in the vicinity of La Carolina, the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa took place in 1212. A decisive event for the Christian conquest of the Muslim territory.
As in most of the province, La Carolina stands out for its landscape of extensive olive groves. In the past, mining was vital in the area, which is why several chimneys remain as relics of the past. A unique industrial heritage that significantly characterises the population centre and its surroundings.
La Carolina was actually founded in 1767 by Charles III. A centre resulting from the colonisation plans of the monarch in Sierra Morena, indeed, it is considered the most important municipality. Its rationalist urban layout, typical of the 18th century and orthogonal in shape, is noteworthy. In the town centre, the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Palacio del Intendente Olavide are of importance. Other really striking buildings include the old Prison, the Customs Towers, and the Monoliths of its foundation.
It is undoubtedly a space that combines history, heritage, and a natural setting like Despeñaperros, which never leaves the increasingly numerous visitors indifferent.
