Villanueva de la Reina

Villanueva de la Reina is a picturesque locality in the province of Jaén, situated in the Sierras de Andújar Natural Park. It occupies a privileged position north of the Jaén countryside, next to the Guadalquivir River, which crosses its lands and offers a fluvial landscape of great beauty. To the north of the municipal boundary of Villanueva de la Reina, one finds the characteristic landscape of Sierra Morena, a unique environment where vegetation and hills blend with olive groves.

Historically, the roots of Villanueva de la Reina date back to Roman times, preserving the archaeological site of the Hermitage of Santa Potenciana. However, its origin as a settlement dates to the Middle Ages (13th century, after the conquest by Alfonso X the Wise), initially called Villanueva de Andúxar. With independence in 1812, it was renamed Villanueva del Río, and in 1862 adopted its current name, as a reward for the aid received from Queen Isabel II.

Its monumental heritage highlights the Parish Church of the Nativity, built between the 15th and 17th centuries, retaining a Mudéjar chapel from the 12th century at its base.

The natural surroundings of Villanueva de la Reina are a combination of olive fields, riverside vegetation, and gentle hills offering incredible panoramic views. For lovers of active tourism and nature, the areas next to the Guadalquivir River are ideal for hiking routes and enjoying the local biodiversity. This biodiversity is characterized by its varied flora and fauna typical of the river basin. As part of the Sierras de Andújar Natural Park, its Mediterranean ecosystem consists of cork oaks, holm oaks, stone pines, gall oaks, and shrubs. Therefore, this charming landscape and the tranquility of Villanueva de la Reina are good reasons for a rural tourism getaway. Moreover, due to its olive-growing tradition, one can enjoy olive oil tourism activities such as a visit to the Oro Bailén Oil Mill with EVOO Tasting.
