Logroño

Due to its location on the Peninsula, Logroño has always been a place of passage and a conflict zone due to its role as a border between different kingdoms during the Middle Ages.

The Ebro Park is one of the city's largest parks and also its main lung; it owes its name to the river that bathes it. The Ebro is crossed by four bridges, the most notable being the Stone Bridge, which is one of Logroño’s symbols.

The co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, with its Romanesque origin and circular plan, gained collegiate status when it merged with the Church of San Martín de Albelda in 1453. Inside, great works of art such as Michelangelo Buonarroti's "Calvary" can be found. On the other hand, the convent of La Merced was built in the 16th century and later served other functions such as a hospital and a tobacco factory. It is currently the seat of the Parliament of La Rioja.

The church of San Bartolomé, in Romanesque style, is located within the walls of Logroño, whose Revellín gate and arch are some of the few remnants of the fortification. The church of Santiago el Real is the oldest in origin in Logroño, as it is believed that this temple had its precedent in the early years of the area's Christianization. The church of Santa María de Palacio is famous in Logroño for its Gothic spire and altarpiece, and for housing the magnificent Gothic sculpture of the Virgin of the Ebro.

In the old town of Logroño, the Mayor and Portales streets stand out, along with the medieval and Renaissance houses found there, such as the House of the Gables, an excellent example of civil architecture. The Espolón Walk is currently the financial centre of Logroño and its most famous square. Additionally, on Laurel Street one can taste the best dishes of Rioja cuisine.

The wine wealth of La Rioja is widely known, boasting its own designation of origin. Thus, Logroño is one of the perfect cities for wine tourism lovers, as it has several wineries where one can enjoy and learn about wine culture. In the old town of Logroño, it is possible to visit the cellars, charming wineries located beneath the houses.

Another of Logroño's most interesting places is the Museum of La Rioja, located in an 18th-century mansion. This museum houses a large number of historical-artistic vestiges from all eras that help trace the history of the autonomous community.
