Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Santo Domingo de la Calzada is known as the “second Compostela” due to its location on the Camino de Santiago; and is called “de la Calzada” because it was built on a Roman road.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which was an important centre during the Middle Ages, is closely linked to Saint Domingo and the Pilgrims’ Hospital, founded by the venerable around the second half of the 12th century to serve as a sanatorium for those who pilgrimaged to Santiago. Nowadays, it is a national tourism parador.

The Cathedral of Santo Domingo was also built in the town by Saint Domingo in the second half of the 12th century. Initially, it was a pilgrimage chapel, but later it became a Romanesque church. Over time, it gained the status of collegiate church and later that of a cathedral.

Near the cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, you will find the medieval walls, dating specifically from the 13th-14th century.

Just thirty minutes from Santo Domingo de la Calzada is the small Valdezcaray ski resort.
