Colomares Castle is the most emblematic monument in Benalmádena, a unique and fantastic building in homage to the Discovery of America.
The construction of Colomares Castle was the work of Doctor Esteban Martín and Martín, along with two masons from Mijas, Juan Blanco and Domingo Núñez. The construction started in 1987 and ended in 1994.
The result is a fantastic mix of different styles from the history of architecture, including Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Mudéjar. As construction materials, stone, cement and brick were used. Furthermore, the techniques employed were those typical of the Middle Ages and were done by hand by Esteban himself, aided by Domingo and Juan.
The footprint of this construction covers 1,500 square metres, making it the largest monument dedicated to the figure of Columbus to date.
Various elements alluding to the Catholic Monarchs, the three medieval cultures in Spain, and others related to Columbus's voyage to America can be seen. A Chinese pagoda is also present, symbolising Columbus's initial idea to reach the Asian coasts.
Indeed, Colomares Castle attempts to put forward the possibility that Christopher Columbus was of Mallorcan origin. It also pays tribute to the Catholic Monarchs, Vicente Yáñez, Diego Arana, and other historical figures who accompanied Columbus on his first expedition.
Inside, there is a chapel dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, with an area of 1.96 square metres. Hence, in the early 90s, it featured as the smallest church in the world in the “Guinness Book of Records”.
The building also houses an empty mausoleum, symbolising the Eternity to which Columbus journeyed after his death.
In short, Colomares Castle is a wonderful “book” in stone that tells us about the Discovery of America through art.
