Just a few kilometres from the famous city of Marbella, Estepona is one of the main tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol. The Plaza de las Flores is one of the main and most beautiful squares in its old town, surrounded by bars and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious tapas.
The ruins of the Castle of San Luis, built in the 15th century by order of the Catholic Monarchs to defend the area of Estepona, is located right in the historic centre. Very close by, you can visit the ruins of a Roman mausoleum, one of the few remains of this civilisation in Estepona.
The Estepona Orchidarium is one of the town’s main attractions. It is a modern-design botanic garden, with a waterfall and a variety of different types of orchids and other plants inside.
The Clock Tower is located in the square of the same name. This watchtower originally dates back to the Muslim period, but it was renovated in the 18th century and a neoclassical dome was added. The Church of Los Remedios is one of the most iconic in Estepona. The bell tower of this temple is its most characteristic feature. It was built in the 18th century and features a ceramic capital.
The Casa del Aljibe, the former town hall, now houses the Archaeological Museum of Estepona. It holds a small collection of pieces, some of which were found in the seabed. This building hides an Arab cistern beneath the floor, giving it its name. The Palaeontological, Ethnographic and Bullfighting Museum is another cultural attraction in Estepona.
Besides fantastic beaches like La Rada or El Cristo, this town in Malaga boasts a wide range of leisure activities, including the Estepona International Fantastic Film and Horror Festival, during which an interesting comic exhibition can be seen. The Estepona Marina is a perfect place to enjoy a meal, a drink or simply have a stroll, as the port boasts a very pleasant atmosphere.
Estepona has a rich culinary tradition featuring the Málaga-style fried fish, as well as the famous grilled sardines on skewers.
