Fuengirola is a small town on the Costa del Sol (Málaga) where you can enjoy fantastic beaches. The thin strip of coastline where Fuengirola is located is 8 kilometres long. This coastline is home to some of the most outstanding beaches of the Costa del Sol, such as Los Boliches - Las Gaviotas, la Campana, or Torreblanca.
As a tourist destination, Fuengirola has a long history of offering a wide range of services: hotels, leisure parks, golf courses, restaurants, riding schools, and even a notable cultural agenda. Its seafront promenade is perfect for strolling while enjoying the sun by the sea or summer nights.
Fuengirola preserves an interesting historical heritage. From its Andalusian period, we can find the Sohail Castle, built in the time of Abderraman III (10th century) and where some parts of its original walls can still be seen. But the history of the place where this castle stands dates back much further. Here, remains of the ancient Phoenician-Punic civilisation that gave rise to Fuengirola (6th-3rd centuries BC) were found. Today, this castle hosts cultural events such as the Oktoberfest Beer Festival or the Marenostrum concert festival. Next to the castle hill, the remains of the Roman city of Suel were found.
Other finds came to light in the archaeological sites of the Finca del Secretario and Torreblanca. Here, Roman baths and a Visigothic necropolis were found.
In the historic centre of Fuengirola, you can feel its typical village atmosphere. The Constitution Square (19th century) is the nerve centre and the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary stands there.
The neighbourhood of Santa Fe de los Boliches retains its seafaring essence. Meanwhile, Pueblo López is full of popular Andalusian architecture in its narrow streets.
Sport also has its place in Fuengirola. In the municipality and surrounding areas, there are up to twenty 18-hole golf courses. It has a racecourse and other riding schools in the neighbouring town of Mijas. Additionally, you can play tennis in different clubs in this area. Not to mention water sports, which are particularly significant in Fuengirola. Diving enthusiasts find incredible seabeds in Fuengirola to practice it, and diving schools to learn it. Furthermore, next to the fishing port is the marina where various nautical sports can be practised, such as sailing or boating.
Fuengirola's cuisine, like the rest of the Costa del Sol, revolves mainly around fish. Also typical here is the ajoblanco with grapes (a cold soup made with almonds, oil, garlic, and grapes) and of course, the Andalusian gazpacho. Among its traditions are also its festivals in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary in October and the Festival of the Virgen del Carmen in the neighbourhood of Los Boliches in July.
