The Castle of Sohail (also known as Suel, or Suhayl) is located on a hill on the right bank of the Fuengirola river, about 38 metres above sea level.
It can be seen from the Costa del Sol motorway. It is a privileged viewpoint to contemplate a wide stretch of the coast that overlooks the Sierra de Mijas, where the municipality of Fuengirola is located.
The exterior perimeter of this castle is 207.6 metres, with a total area of 2,708 square metres. Its layout is an irregular polygon with eight sides. Originally, there was a tower at each vertex, of which six are preserved today. All are solid, with the entrance tower featuring a horseshoe arch. It has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 25 June 1985.
Given its favourable geographical conditions, this location was already occupied in ancient times by the Punics and Romans. Precisely on the ruins of their settlements, a first defensive construction was built in the Caliphate period (956 A.D.). It might then have been an almenara tower or watchtower with a citadel around it, but there are currently not many documentary or archaeological data available. Between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Almoravids built a new defensive enclosure (ribat) with an irregular layout, adapting to the natural slopes of the terrain.
In 1485, the Castle of Sohail was captured by Christian troops during their campaign against the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. Since then, the architecture of this military enclosure has been adapted to become the castle we see today.
A few years later, it lost its military function and was put up for public auction. It fell into civilian hands and remained in a state of abandonment until the second half of the last century.
However, its restoration has made it possible to reclaim its history, ensure its conservation and make it a meeting place for the people of Fuengirola. Today, it is a space where various cultural events are held, such as the Marenostrum Fuengirola concert series.
