Pamplona

Pamplona, the capital city of the Chartered Community of Navarre, was founded by the Roman general Pompey, who named it Pompaelo. During the Muslim rule and thanks to the good relations with the Ebro's Muladi royalty, the Kingdom of Navarre was created. This historical past is reflected in the so-called Old Quarter of Pamplona. This part of the city was originally surrounded by a wall of which few remains exist today. The Plaza del Castillo is the centre of the Old Quarter.

Also, in the old town of Pamplona you can find the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa María la Real, of Romanesque origin, but with predominantly Gothic style. The cathedral of Pamplona is considered the most complete ecclesiastical architectural complex in Spain as it retains intact some rooms that have been destroyed in other cathedrals. In this part of the city you can also find other religious buildings such as the churches of San Saturnino, patron saint of Pamplona; or San Nicolás, a parish from the 12th century.

There is also the Museum of Navarra. This building, a former hospital, houses a collection of historical and artistic vestiges related to the history of Navarre from prehistory to the 20th century.

The Palace of the Constable and the Chamber of Comptos are other historical buildings in the Old Quarter of Pamplona. The former is a 16th-century construction that was the residence of the Counts of Lerín; and the Chamber of Comptos is a 13th-century Gothic building that, before becoming the seat of the Court of Accounts of the Kingdom of Navarre, was a palace.

Moreover, the Citadel of Pamplona is a military fortification with large green spaces that was ordered to be built by Philip II.

Yamaguchi Park is another of the tourist attractions of the city of Pamplona. It is a large Japanese garden with a lake that invites relaxation and meditation.

The Gardens of La Taconera are one of the most beautiful green spaces in Pamplona. Inside, there are various animal species, such as deer or peacocks.

If the city of Pamplona is famous for anything, it is for the Sanfermines. This festival of international tourist interest is celebrated on July 7th and is especially famous for the running of the bulls. The celebrations in honour of San Fermín begin at the Town Hall, a Baroque-style building which currently serves as the city council.

Pamplona is also famous for its gastronomy. As we stroll through the city, and especially through its old quarter, we can savour its famous and delicious pintxos.
