Casa Lis, currently the Art Nouveau and Art Déco Museum, is one of the most iconic and recognised buildings in the city of Salamanca. It was commissioned by Miguel de Lis (a local businessman) from Joaquín de Vargas y Aguirre, an architect from Jerez de la Frontera. The mansion was built following modernist patterns on the old section of the city's wall.
Indeed, the clearest example of modernism in the building is the north façade. The south façade includes a series of classicist elements that break this stylistic continuity.
The building changed owners several times until in 1981 it was expropriated by the Salamanca City Council, which saved it at a time when its condition was close to ruin. Today, after a major restoration process completed in 1995, Casa Lis has regained its splendour. Its central courtyard and façades have been adorned with a collection of stained glass windows, skylights, and other glass elements that faithfully follow modernist patterns.
Currently, it is a unique Art Déco and Art Nouveau Museum on the peninsula, thanks to various loans and donations of pieces in these styles.
