It is located on the ruins of the primitive Major Mosque of Seville.
It conserves the Patio de Abluciones (Courtyard of Ablutions) from the IX Century and the basement of its tower, whose current body of bells is a Leonardo de Figueroa´ s work, from the end of the XVII Century.
The church has a Basilical structure with three naves. The main cross is covered by barrel vaults and the rest of the bays are covered by cross vaults.
Inside the temple, the major altarpiece should be highlighted, because it is considered to be one of the most monumental and representative works of the Baroque style in Seville as well as the colossal altarpiece of the façade of the sacramental chapel, which is dedicated to the Transfiguración (Transfiguration), both are works by Cayetano de Acosta (1770- 1779).
It is dominated by a marvellous silver altar which houses the famous sculpture of the Passion of Christ, by Martínez de Montañés, approximately carried out in 1619. Its procession takes place in the evening of Saint Thursday.
In the chapel that is situated on the right of the Major Chapel, there are sculptures such as the Cristo del Amor by Juan de Mesa from 1618 and the picture of St Cristobal by Martínez Montañés from 1597. On the right arm there is an altarpiece with a small chapel that is dedicated to the Virgin, by José Maestre.
