Hospital de los Venerables

This hospital was founded by Justino Neve in 1675 as residence for the venerable priests. It is located in the Santa Cruz quarter. The building has two floors and consists of a church and an old residence. Its courtyard with galleries of arcades in an upper level should be highlighted. You access to the central fountain through circular steps decorated with glazed tiles. We should also highlight the staircase covered by a Baroque oval dome and decorated with Baroque plasterwork.

The church has only one nave and is covered by a half- barrel vault with lunettes and transverse arches. The vault of the chancel is decorated with frescoes by Valdés Leal that represent the theme of the Invención de la Santa Cruz, as well as the frescoes of the ceiling of the sacristy. In the Major Altarpiece, we should highlight the St Fernando´ s Apotheosis, by Lucas Valdés and St Clemente and St Isidoro by Virgilio Maltoni on both sides.

St Juan Bautista and St Juan Evangelista´ s relieves were carried out by Martínez Montañes and some sculptures by Pedro Roldán. Murillo painted one of his famous Inmaculates in this place that we can now find in the Prado Museum. Nowadays it is the current head office of the Fundación Abengoa.

Built: XVII Century

Author: Leonardo de Figueroa
