This garden was donated by the Princess María Luisa Fernanda, Duchess of Montpellier, to the city of Seville in 1893. They were created as result of the gardens of the Palace of St Telmo that were donated to the city in 1893. Its redesign was carried out by the French engineer Forestier, on the occasion of the Spanish- American Exhibition in 1929.
He respected the original design of the former gardens of the Princess. The avenues cross in bowers with fountains and statues that make the park to become a museum in the open air. The central point of the Parque de María Luisa is the Monte Gurugú (Gurugú hill). This space consists of the Fuente de los Leones (Fountain of lions) of Renaissance and Arab- Andalusian influences; the Isleta de los Patos (Ducks island) which is a pond skirted by rustic stone with a central island and an exotic pavilion; and the Estanque de los Lotos (Pond of Lotus).
The group is completed with the Plaza de España and the Plaza de América, the last one is surrounded by rosebushes and palm trees. The vegetation of this beautiful park consists of groves, elms and acacias, as well as beautiful hedges formed by myrtles and rose gardens. The ornamentation of its gardens should be highlighted. It consists of 16 statues of Victories, columns, staircases, etc. The small squares of Gustavo Adolfo Béquer, the Quintero´ s Brothers and the Princess María Luisa are very famous.
