It is located in the place of the former Convento de la Orden Merced Calzada (Convent of the Religious Order Merced Calzada). It was founded by St Pedro Nolasco in one of the lands ceded by Fernando III, after the conquest Seville.
This building is an example of the Andalusian Mannerism organised in three courtyards as well as other convents. It houses a collection that takes in from the Middle Ages, from the XII to the XV Century, and, especially, Barroque and Romanesque painting (XVII and XIX Centuries).
It is particularly interesting the exhibition of Seville painting and Spanish sculpture from the XV to the XX Century. From the XVII Century we should highlight Velázquez, Zurbarán, Murillo, Alonso Cano and Valdés Leal, as well as works of artists such as El Greco, Lucas Cranach and artists from the XIX Century, in Romantic style in which popular and pure themes predominate, as well as landscapes. The museum is considered to be the second most important Spanish art gallery.
