It is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Baroque style in Seville. The Palace of the Dukes of Montpensier is popularly known as Palace of San Telmo.
At the beginning, it was the Escuela de Navegantes (Navigators´ School), so that is why it is called like that, because on its main entrance is placed the statue of San Telmo, Patron Saint of Navigators.
It is rectangular and consists of several interior courtyards, towers placed on the four corners, a chapel and gardens. The facade is 130 meters by 5 meters, and has a laborious Churrigueresque façade, decorated with statues and framed by columns. We can see the sculpture of San Telmo in its upper part, flanked by the patron Saints of the city San Fernando and San Hermenegildo.
In the Northern façade there are twelve statues of distinguished citizens of Seville, by the sculptor Antonio Susillo. The chapel is a work of the architect Leonardo de Figueroa and is decorated by the painter Domingo Martínez. A Century later it becomes the Colegio de Marina, until 1844 when it was closed and turned to a residence for the Princess María Luisa, Duchess of Montpensier, who donated this building that became a Diocesan Seminar.
Nowadays, it is head office of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia.
