The history of the Royal Alcazar dates back to the High Middle Ages. Since the city was under Islamic power, Seville played a first order political and cultural role. During this period, its cultural richness experienced an important growth thanks to the Arab culture, despite it depended on the Córdoba Caliphate, and it also became the most important city in Al-Andalus. The caliphate downfall caused the division into different independent kingdoms, and one of them was the kingdom of Seville.
Alfonso VI´ s expansionist wishes, the king of Castilla y León, cause the arrival of the Almohads to the country until 1220; that year, the Almohad power is in decline and the king Fernando III turns the city into a wide Christian kingdom.
In 1355, Seville suffers a terrible earthquake causing serious consequences in many buildings.
The start of the Middle Ages takes place with the discovering of America in 1492. Seville becomes the first European shipping port to America. The Casa de Contratación is created in the Royal Alcazar, in 1503, for the administration and control of the traffic between Castilla and America, regulating the legal and scientific relations with America in this way. That was how the city became a multicultural focus that influenced the arts, especially the architecture, the painting, the sculpture and the literature.
During the years after the Reconquest, the Jewish community takes the city and creates the neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and San Bartolomé.
A deep demographic, economic and political crisis affects Spain during the XIV and XV Century. Commerce was the activity less affected by the crisis. The Civil War between Pedro I and Enrique de Trastámara, at the end of the XIV Century, brought a new dynasty to the Spanish throne, the Trastámara dynasty, and it meant the victory of the nobility.
