The history of the Cathedral coincides with a period of fighting and internal disputes into the heart of the Church. The end of the XV Century and the XVI Century is linked to a period of unrest. It coincided with the Islamic expansion; that was why Spain started to defend what it considered Christian unity, promoting the Catholic Reform culminated in Trento.
“Firstly the Jews´ persecution; then, the Erasmus supporters´ persecutions; and later, fights against Lutero´ s Reform”. These facts had influence in people mentality and marked Spain more than the rest of Europe. Between 1492 and 1504, between the discovery of America and Isabel the Catholic´ s death, many important changes took place in relation with the politics and the society of the peninsular kingdoms.
But there is another important historical moment that we use to explain these facts: the victory related to the Jews´ expulsion, a community who suffered the ostracism when the kingdoms of the Catholic Kings had a community who was more powerful than them.
At the same time, the Turkish superpower imposed its power over the Mediterranean Sea to the centre of Europe. The fight went to worst with the split between Catholics and Protestants and the subsequent wars among the Europeans. It is amazing how a country with disadvantages such as a smaller population, the absence of a centralized administration or the absence of floors and water could keep an intensive fight during a century and a half, marking the limits of the Turkish, French and Protestant expansion, and creating an rich culture.
